Words Will Never Hurt Me

Sticks and stones will break my bones

But words will never hurt me.

WRONG! Broken bones will heal. Bruises will fade, but words do hurt. They can go “viral” in our infinitely complex brains, reside there and monitor and affect our behavior without our even being aware of their impact. These words might not have been meant to hurt or perhaps they were but in either case we humans give them undue credence. In my coaching practice, I have noticed that people are guided by words from the past and that unexamined these words are limiting. I have also noticed that these words that live on in our fertile brains are usually the negative ones. We humans tend to remember the negative more than the positive.

We are particularly vulnerable when we are in transition or when we are in a poor work environment. This vulnerability makes us more susceptible to rejection and critical words. I invite you to think of the most recent time when someone’s words bothered you. I suggest you examine the effect of the words and then make a conscious decision to live without the cloud of those words. Think of what you believe you have heard and then how you have interpreted it. In the words of my friend and fellow coach, Teri Conrad (www.thewinnerwithin.com), “what are you making up about that?”

In July, I attended a class run by the VIA Institute on Character. In particular we discussed the VIA Character Strengths, including the work of positive psychology leaders Martin Seligman, PhD, author of Learned Optimism and Authentic Happiness, and David Cooperrider, well known for his work in Appreciative Inquiry. The emphasis was on knowing your character strengths/values and then putting them to work in your life. The benefits of positive assessment are “a shift from what’s wrong to what’s strong.” (Duckworth, Steen & Seligman, 2005)

JOB SEARCH LIKE A TENNIS RACKET

Tennis rackets have a sweet spot—the optimal place for the ball to strike for success. However, some of the most difficult shots to return are those tennis balls hit from odd places on the racket. It might have been unintended by the player but still successful. I had one tennis coach who jokingly called that getting your full money’s worth out of the racket. I suggest that if you are only looking for the sweet spot in your job search, you might not be getting “all your money’s worth” out of what you have to offer. You might need to try something different. Some suggestions:

Accountability groups—the synergy of the group drives you to action. Find one in a local job club or form one with others you know who are in search.
Boards of directors—even if only in your head. Instead of interpreting job search results by yourself, do it from the filter of a pre-chosen group of people you admire. You can even arrange for an actual board of directors to give you advice and feedback.
Use family members and friends as an accountability group by e-mailing them where you are in your search. Outline highs, lows and areas where you are trying to improve. This not only holds you accountable but it keeps their inquiries from making you uncomfortable. It puts you in charge.

SO WHAT ARE YOU MAKING UP ABOUT THAT?

So you didn’t get the job or didn’t get the interview or didn’t hear back about the application or interview? As my friend and fellow coach Teri (www.thewinnerwithin.com) would say, “So what are you making up about that?” Our fertile minds get very creative and not always helpfully so. I suggest that you take these thoughts out of the dark recesses of your mind and air them out. You might make a chart. On the first column, put in what you might be making up about the situation. Title the second column “Is This Really, Really True.” The third column can be titled “Alternate Perspectives” and a potential fourth could be “Solutions.”

A good book along these lines is Loving What Is: Four Questions that Can Change Your Life by Byron Katie with Stephen Mitchell. You might also refer to Katie’s web site, www.thework.com.

Thoughts about Work

My blog editor, the talented MC Pastoret, asked me this week what purpose I had in mind for my blog and I couldn’t give her a satisfactory answer. I think she was disappointed that someone who had the privilege of having readers didn’t know. So when a friend, Sebastian, sent the poem below, it made me think not just of what the poem elicited but of MC’s question. What I want for you is both to have the tools to get a job, and to have that job be the kind of work that makes you look forward to getting up in the morning. Therefore, at times I want the blog to trigger ideas and thoughts, and at times the blog will be about tools. Ponder the following:

What is your motivation to work? (It might be the work itself and it might be to support yourself and your family.)
When were you most energized at work? (Since it is difficult to get what you don’t want, you need to find work that will make you happy.)
However, if you are currently employed but not finding the work fulfilling, how can you change your perspective to make this work satisfying at least in the interim? (The work might not change but you can choose to change, which can shift the dynamic. I find that many people who are not happy at work, take it out on the job by withholding some portion of their effort or themselves which then comes back to bite them in less than stellar reviews.)

To Be of Use

The people I love the best
jump into work head first
without dallying in the shallows
and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight.
They seem to become natives of that element,

GRATITUDE

Due to a power outage last night, I didn’t get written the planned segment about interviewing. However, this minor inconvenience made me realize how grateful I am for so many things. I was grateful that I had just finished saving the work I was doing on a spreadsheet when things went black. I was grateful that I was able to find my way to the kitchen to the flashlight, which still had juice. I was very happy to be able to read an interesting book with a small book lamp thoughtfully given me by family. I am most grateful to the Com Ed workers who in a proverbial dark and stormy night got the power up and running again. So many people do their jobs and it means so much to others.

My suggestion to you is to break the cycle of interview stress with moments of gratitude. This can be grounding. When we get caught in a negative spiral in job search, we forget how often things in this world do work.

In an earlier blog, I might have quoted a framed saying that family members gave me: “Change your thoughts and you change your world.” So if the job search is dreary, I suggest you spend a few minutes thinking of and writing down all you are grateful for. It can be a breath of fresh air in the fog. Read the poem below by Hafiz and let some light into your soul with a little gratitude.

WHAT NOT TO ASK OR SAY ON AN INTERVIEW

I apologize for missing last week. So far we have covered the “so tell me about yourself question,” the weakness question and behavioral interviewing. I have kept the quote from two weeks ago as it is apropos of what not to ask on an interview. Your goal in the interview is to sell yourself as a solution to the company’s problems. You want to show that you are motivated to work for more than just the paycheck. Therefore, you should avoid asking questions about benefits, holidays, vacations and sick leave. You wait until you are being made an offer to ask about these topics and perhaps even then don’t ask about sick leave.

Don’t Bring Up

Anything negative about a former employer or former fellow employees. The potential employer would wonder what you will say about them in the future.
Family issues, your health or personal problems.
Child care issues.
Ability to work from home or flex time.
Religion or politics.
The company’s smoking policies. (For smokers, this makes the interviewer wonder how much time you will take with smoking breaks. For nonsmokers, this makes the interviewer wonder about your allergies or sensitivities.)
The company’s policy on absence or tardiness. (This would plant the seed that you are planning on being absent or have problems with tardiness.)
A planned vacation that you would need to take off time for. (You can bring this up when offered the job because by then, the company has a vested interest in hiring you.)
In response to an interviewer’s question, never say “I hate when that question is asked.” (This is ungracious and makes you sound as if you have gone on many interviews and not been hired.)

Don’t Ask

When will I get a raise?
When does vacation start to accrue?
I have a planned vacation in one month. Is that a problem?
What is the holiday schedule?
If I don’t need benefits, will the company increase my pay by the amount that they would have paid on my behalf?
What does the company do? (You should know this from research you have done before the interview.)

INTERVIEW–THE WEAKNESS QUESTION

Candidates are frequently asked “what is your weakness?” This is not a time for true confessions. It is time for a well-thought-out response that doesn’t “sink your battleship.” There are several possibilities.

One is a weakness you can overcome easily. This could be software that you don’t currently know but is similar to others that you have easily mastered. You might even mention how you are going to do so before beginning the job. Another is a weakness that is not vital to the job for which you are interviewing.

And still another is a strength turned inside out. Look at your own personal strengths and see how they might have been carried too far.

For example, you might be very analytical and this might have in the past caused you to ignore the big picture but now…..
Or you might say that you are very goal-oriented and this has caused you in the past to not communicate with your team as much as they would have liked but now….
Or you might have been so loyal that you stayed with a firm even though there were signs that it was in trouble.

INTERVIEW–THE FIRST QUESTION

In the next few blogs, I am going to write about interviewing, including behavioral interviewing, the infamous weakness question and questions you should and should not ask. Whether the interview is by phone or in person, after a few pleasantries, the first question frequently is, “So tell me about yourself.” An alternate version is, “Walk me through your resume.”

The response to this question is sometimes called the 90 second personal commercial for a reason. The answer should be as close to 90 seconds as possible. Fill out the steps below so that you don’t ramble. Pretend you are using a filter when you look at your answer. That filter should be “Is this information necessary to the interviewer and does it help me land the job.”

You do not have to follow the pattern below word for word. However, I suggest typing your final commercial on a separate piece of paper and then practicing it until it flows.

You start by

giving your name if necessary,
and your function. (Function, not title. E.g., Human Resources Professional, IT Professional.)

2. Next you name your prior or current company and title at that company. If useful, you summarize your responsibilities. You list one or two memorable accomplishments in that position. You mention briefly why you left that firm. (Look at the blog on “Leaving Statement” for help on this if needed.)

3. Then you mention the second company, title, experience and accomplishments. You might be asked the reason you left that firm also. So be prepared.

4. You continue doing the steps in #3 for all the companies on your resume. (However, do remember that it is suggested that your resume cover only the last 10-15 years. Therefore, your 90 Second Personal Commercial would parallel that time period.)

5. If you have time, you might list your strengths and give an example of how you have demonstrated one of those strengths at work.

6. It is helpful to end up by summarizing how you meet the needs of the firm or match the job posting.

OTHER NETWORKING TOOLS

Here are two useful tools for networking and job search.

Get a business card. Early in my career search, I found myself in the embarrassing position of writing my name and contact information on a yellow sticky note to hand to a potential contact. Your business card can be a simple one with your name and contact information on it. You do not have to include your address. Instead of a title, you put your function under your name. For example, Human Resources Professional, CPA, Engineer, IT Professional, Administrative Professional, Electrician. This correlates to the function you used in the summary of your resume and in your personal commercial. You can get them professionally printed relatively inexpensively or even do them on your home printer.
If you haven’t joined LinkedIn, do so. LinkedIn is free, and I have seen it be very helpful to clients. It helps you develop and manage your network of professional connections—people you know or should know in your field of interest. Just as important, LinkedIn lets you create a profile for yourself that communicates your value to those contacts. Your profile is one more way to let the world know what you do uniquely well. It is worth spending some time writing it. Then, when you start to build your network, you can ask friends and co-workers to write a recommendation for you. You might also then do the same for them.

HOW TO WRITE YOUR PERSONAL COMMERCIAL OR ELEVATOR SPEECH

The format is simple. I suggest you write out your personal commercial, using the following points:

You introduce yourself. Hello, my name is….
Tell the person who you are by function, not by title. Perhaps use an adjective to describe yourself in this function. For example, “I am a trend-setting web designer…” So begin by using the words, I am….
If relevant, say why you are no longer working for your prior firm or why you are thinking of leaving your current firm. (You will be asked this at some point by friends or during an interview, so get comfortable with stating this.) Make it brief and non-judgmental. You might refer to my earlier blog on the Leaving Statement to see how this works
Say something interesting about your experience or successes that will hook the listener.
Say what you are looking for in a new job and how the listener can help. This can include where you want to work.

Once you have written the words, it’s time to practice the commercial. Call your voice mail to record it and then play it back to see how it sounds to you. Try it out on family members and friends and ask for feedback. When you are happy with your personal commercial, practice it until you can give it gracefully whenever needed. Practice in front of a mirror. Record it without your notes and listen to how it sounds. Re-record until you can deliver it smoothly.

As a side note, you might find that you will also use portions of the personal commercial in e-mails to contacts to let them know how they can help you.

SOME NOTES:

Express your value.
Speak with confidence. If you are sure of your value, your listener will believe in that value.
Make it short. This is not a history of your life.
Do not improvise. If you do, you will talk too much.
Be professional and upbeat. Don’t let this be about the sadness of what you may have lost.
Once again: practice, practice, practice.
